Adapting a Kelley Ryan Feeder Wagon to Feed Ground Hay

Subject: Layering ground hay, silage and commodities in chuckwagon or kelly ryan.?

Baldwin City, KS

I will likely be using a chuck wagon to feed up some ground stalks and other less desirable roughage. I also have corn silage available and hope to be able to procure some modified or syrup as needed. I have layered silage and DDG in a kelly ryan before and was satisfied with the results. What if the ration is a fairly high percentage of junk hay or stalks? Will the cows still clean it up, having not been mixed, but by the beaters or front chain?
I am wintering beef cows here, so things might not need to be perfect, however, I can't afford for them not to clean things up.Thanks. Markwright

I used an Allis Chalmers powered feed wagon/silage wagon last year and it worked fine. Layered in wet distillers with ground stalks and some hay.......they loved it......the wet distillers and protein tubs get the microbial enzymes feeding in their stomacks. Causing themes to go after the roughage or poorer hay. Kal Drogo

It really depends on how many cows you have to feed. Kelley Ryan does a good enough job but they are tiny. I use a 716A JD wagon to feed 300 cows everyday during the winter. I grind a bale of oat straw, alfalfa, sweetlfeaf, and grass hay on a 1 to 1 ratio into the ground hay pile and put 4 big grapple loads of ground hay in the bottom and then two loads of silage on top. I know it's damn sure not exact but it works for us. When the calves are hitting the ground I don't have all day to piss around with a Kelley Ryan. If you layer it right you'd be suprised how well it's mixed in the tires. But I only feed in the tires when it's to muddy otherwise I spread it on the ground on corn stalks. I feed in a different place every day and spread the manure around. Another reason why I like my 716 forage wagon is that I use the same tractor I load it with to feed with, lot more time to mess with a two wheel kr and a jack stand. proud2Bafarmer

We feed alot of Loomix around here and I will say it does help them consume some poorer quality roughage. However, I have yet to see it cause cattle to chew on a T post, just to get down to the meat, as has been suggested by our supplier. proud2Bafarmer

Feeding 200. Needing to have plan B for farm two that usually lives on hay rings and Loomix, but will be eating poorer quality hay and silage this winter. I feed with a 425 vertical at the home place. I have a 10' KR and a 110 chuckwagon on two wheel chasis also. If this works well enough, I may consider selling the vertical and going totally with cheaper old wagons that can be drug through mud easier. I would rather have the money towards a good tub grinder. It takes a little more time but layering it into the wagon, dumping it on the ground and reloading it should produce a pretty good mix.

We used to do that with a Roorda feeder wagon.   Kinda slow but it worked.

At one time I had thoughts of getting another cheap old Roorda wagon, making it stationary with a long enough unloader on it to dump directly into the wagon on wheels.  Put an electric motor to operate it and it could have been a pretty cheap way to mix feed.

Thankfully it never happened.

The only way I would own my own tub grinder is if we didn't have any custom guys. I rented a pretty new 1100 Haybuster once, had it on a 1486 and that was a long day and it end up tearing up my pto. I have a lot bigger tractors now but I can have a guy come out and grind 200 bales in 2.5 hours and pay $500 bucks.

What is a Kelley Ryan?  I've never heard of that before.

I feed a lot of cows with a chuck wagon, its just got one axle, but I use an 856 with a fast hitch to load and feed so I just use a stand instead of a jack when I park it to load. I feed in old tractor tires so that helps with the mix I think as it runs longer in one place.
